Starter problems???

Have had 1 starter go out during a sunday drive a month ago. I just got a new starter installed and started the truck only to hear a grinding sound coming from the engine/starter area. I pushed down on the gas and the engine stopped and the starter was smoking badly. I have know idea what has happened?? I've never heard this kind of noise before from the old girl. Any ideas or suggestions as to what i need to ajust or repair. The truck is a 1952 B-3 PW.
