Sounds like you may have somehow changed your display settings.
If you are running in 4-bit (16-color) mode, most color images will look terrible!
If you are running in 8-bit (256-color) mode, some images will look fine, but others may be "dithered" to "fake" the extra colors.
However, it's MUCH better to run your machine in 16-bit (65,535 colors) mode or higher, as long as you have enough memory on your video board.
I think that will fix your problem.
