Diff between Chrysler Marine and Dodge flatheads?

I wonder at what point they were first called flatheads.
Before OHV motors took over?

Anyway, so far as I can tell...
Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodge/Desoto made a "small block"
and a "big block" L-head. These varied in
size from 175 to 309 cubic inches, with a lot of
displacement overlap between the blocks. Like a 241
small block and a 214 big block or some such.
I guess alot of parts are interchangeable. What about
Chrysler marine? I live on the the coast; lots of
boating- there's a flathead six under every rock.
Some have dual carbs. Some have different cams. Some
have high-compression heads, maybe. And I've seen with
my own eyes some exhaust pipes maybe four inches thick.
Does anyone have any credible information?
