Sad to say the fact that compression comes back on some, but not all cylinders with the squirt of oil is indicitive of bad valves, on the holes where the compression stays low, and bad rings where it doesn't. For that matter, no matter what your problem, if you pull the head off the engine, it would be silly not to have the valves done while you had it off. If you go that route, make sure the replacements are modern metalurgically, so they are hard enough for unleaded gas.
