I don't know why you would want to go to such length to avoid a few cheap bulbs . Go to your local parts store & buy a internal resistor coil,makes for a clean & neat firewall. Get a rebuilt one wire alt. Much better system. All for around a $ 100.oo can't go wrong.
Give it a try, you'll be glad you did.
