I just put a 2 speed transfer case in my WC53. It was not difficult. The WC53 came with a 1 speed NP. The swap required getting a set of transfer case mount out of a Dodge 6X6 (Frame mounting holes are the same as the WC 53). I then purchaced a 2 speed transfer case from a WM300. I wanted to retain the emergency brake on the transfer case which gave me a choice of cutting the floor or dropping the transfer case 1 1/2". I lowered the case by using 5/16 steel plate to make some extensions. I mounted them loosly to the transder case mounts then raised the transfer case into place and tightened everything up. I also had to remove "unbolt" the frame cross member that is located between the transmission and transfer case as it was in the way of the jack shaft. I modified the shift lever mounts (I have a SM420 transmission) and attached the e brake lever. I also had to bring the rear drive shaft off the rear center drive shaft since my differential is centered on the axle. To do this I simply got a yoke from a transmission with the E brake drum attached to it and used it as the center transfer case yoke. I also had to shorten the rear drive shaft. The front drive shaft was just fine. The yoke on the transfer case that normally has the drive shaft attached to it (WM300) was modified. I simply had the yoke ears cut off in a lathe and then put it back in position. This stops any wire or trash from getting caught on it and wrapped up in the truck. I am real happy with the conversion. It is quieter since I am using the center output shaft and I like the low range on the truck. I am planning on replacing the rear axle on my civilian PW with one from a WC 53 to take advantage of the centered differential. There has to be a lot less wear and tear by going straigt through the transfer case rather than using the offset output shaft. An it's easier on the ears.
