A WORD OF ADVICE ON N.O.S. seals

I am in the process of replacing my oil and
grease seals in the front axle of my 1/2 ton WC12.

These seals were replaced by me less than 2 years ago with N.O.S. felt/leather seals from one
of the Dodge truck suppliers.

Now after less than 1000 miles on the front end, the oil retainer seal and inner wheel greal seals
are shot to hell. This failure caused 90 weight to
enter the front drum destroying my drum brakes.
Also, the oil washed out the inner and outer wheel bearing causing them to overheat (they are all heat scored now)

I discovered the failing seals after my brakes became less and less effective. When I torn down the front, the drums were filled with grease
and oil.

When I examined the seals, I could see the old
leather tearing apart from the metal body.
It was actually disinegrating!

This little mess cost me new seals, brake shoes and wheel bearings. I am a little upset as I thought this area of the truck was done with and didn't need any more money sunk into it.
It's hard enough keeping up on maintenance on the old rig then having to do and pay for a job
twice.

My advice: screw the N.O.S. stuff, as it is too old to stand up to weekly usage. Get modern
rubber equivalents from a local source whenever you can. the local NAPA guys have
been wonderful in helping me get this stuff.

I am gonna replace the other side (which was done already too with N.O.S.) with NAPA
seals.
