David,

congrats on your new truck. Sounds like your confronting the reality of life with a 40 year old heavy duty monster. My first sugestion is check the compression. Sounds like your power is down alot. I too thought lines of angry motorists were normal, until I drove my dads m-43, with a strong 250 ci. Even the 230 is a good motor if its running good. The cylinders should run around 110-120 psi compression.

I cannot vouch for the trans, my only experience is with my 52 m-37. It has a np-420 and seems capable of everyday use (unlike the trans in my 68 IH 1300). Once the brakes and engine are up to spec, you should be able to drive it ocasionally with only minor discomfort and lots of pride.

Best of luck and Happy New Year.

John
