There were various types of switches. The simple example is a spring loaded switch in the absence of a solid hydraulic resitance makes a contact turning on the light indicating a hydraulic failure. Once activated by failure it would stay on until replaced or reset, depending on type. Simply repairing the brakes didn,t neccesarily turn off the light. Like any other idiot light, it comes on before the ignition starts, to indicate it is indeed a working circit in case you need it.
