I've seen them broken, and I've got a stuck one with a stripped gear to deal with on my TD too.
I think the basic casting is a zinc alloy, as used on old toy cars. Low melting point, difficult to repair (would probably epoxy together - forget welding or hot forming)
If it'll operate at all just crank it back and forth till it frees off. If it breaks save the parts to rebuild another. They only really fail two ways, broken castings and stripped gears, and sometimes you can juggle parts.
