Personally I don't think of PWs as a "hobby".
It is a way of life for me and many of the PW owners who met through Gordon Maney's PW Advertiser started in the mid-80s. The hobbiest and collectors came later as PW owners shared info, stories, mutual love of these old trucks and revived them so that they were seen more often by the public.
This caught the attention of hobbiest who had become tired of restoring brand-X vehicles. Then came the collectors who were looking for investments to resell later and make a profit after the fad or craze had driven up the prices. they payed to get the best trucks available and along with the professional hobbiest, bought up alot of the NOS parts ,restoring their already nice trucks with NOS parts when, the parts replaced were in great shape already.
We then started seeing the outragious asking prices of $10,000-up. What person who pays $12,000-$20,000 for a restored PW is going to take it out and work it? Most likely no one.
You can spend as much as you want to restore your PW,,but that doesn't make it worth it and anyone can spend as much as they want for a PW, but that doesn't automatically make it worth that much.
No matter how much you spend to restore or buy a PW, does not make it worth it!
Personally, I see prices coming down lately. These people are probibly selling their trucks quicker,GOOD! Hopefully GREED has just about run its course. You can spout the "law of supply and demand" but, it was greed that drove prices so high in the first place.
Personally, I would not spend so much money on something I didn't intend to keep! $10,000 buys a lotta groceries and I can't eat my PW but, put to work it can help feed me for years.
I knew the moment I saw my 1st PW, that this was a truck I would keep for the rest of my life!
The last 1968 WM300 made and stored,in mint condition with less than 5mi., all options and 3-point hitch with attachments ? YEA!
I'd pay $25,000 for and maybe a little more but nothing less than original mint condition.
Right or wrong, this is how I see it and how I feel, personally! I realize these comments will net me some harsh retorts but,
I'll take it like a man and just read em with a smile!
