Oil Consumption

I'm just curious since I do drive the highway a lot I usually burn off a quart of oil or so every 1,000 miles (Well, when it's not leaking out all over the place!!). The truck smokes on startup after it's been run and is hot and sometimes between shifts during acceleration/deceleration (just a puff). Is this valve guide wear??? The engine has about 50k on it. I can't decide whether I want to rebuild the heads (based on the smoke) or just replace the engine.
