The MU, MU-2, MU-3, and MS-3 were equipped with 29:1 gearsets as standard ratio. The MS-3 could be ordered with a 9.67:1 high speed gearset. The gearsets of these model winches are the same and interchangeable. The MS-3 with the 29:1 gears is rated at 8000lbs on the first layer of wire with a max input speed of 500rpm. If you increase the input speed to 660rpm you can expect the winch to pull 6000lbs, 1000rpm input drops the first wrap capacity to 4000lbs, 1440rpm input lowers the pull to 2000lbs, and the max input speed with no load is 2000rpm. With these ratings for the MS-3, the same ratings should apply to all the above winch models using the 29:1 gears.
If you run your wire out from the bottom of your drum and are spooling in you'll have 475rpm input speed at 1000rpm engine speed. If the wire runs out from the top of the drum and you spool in the input speed will be 615rpm at 1000rpm engine speed.
At 3000rpm engine speed you would have either 1425 or 1845 input rpm depending on which direction you run the drum and the drum rpm would be 49 or 63.
Using the optional 9.67:1 high speed gear set at 3000rpm engine would result in 147 or 191 drum rpm.....the bushings in the gear housing and drum supports would smoke.
