Eric,
You're right about the lift pump being an issue. If it stops, the injection pump has to pull fuel all the way from the tank and without the excess fuel from the lift pump to help cool and lubricate, it will self destruct. If he keeps an eye on his lift pump/fuel pressure, I think the inj. pump will give him many miles of happy travels.

Jonas,
Item #1: buy and install a fuel pressure gauge! If it drops below 8 p.s.i. (I think, could be a couple p.s.i. higher or lower?) at wide open throttle, high tail it to the dealer and a get a new lift pump installed. If you're traveling out to BFE, carry one with you. I read that all you need to change it out is a crescent wrench. I also read that the pumps are cheaper from a Cummins dealer.

Spend the rest of today reading the two forums I posted tell your boss I said it was OK ;-) Do a search on the lift pump issue, the 'death wobble' and the 5th gear nut problem. After you've digested all that, you'll be so over whelmed with info you'll be in a daze when you sign the papers and it won't hurt so much [grin].

The folks on the diesel truck resource forum are pretty helpful and seem friendly enough. They'll never hold a candle to this forum, but that goes without saying!

I can't take the leap into a new-to-me-truck until next summer. Until then I read and ask questions....
