Over the years I took many a transmission out standard + automatic without a transmission jack. When I was a young fella I took 3 speed standards out on my chest + lifted them with my anvil arms that I got from poundin truck tires.Automatics + 4 speed truck trannies I used to put a metal milk crate under the trans + with a helper (some helpers helped me more by stayin away)the helper would let the vehicle down a bit either by floor jack or air bumper jack, very unsafe + I thankfully only got broken ribs once ,them cast iron Power glides were heavy + you had only a little slot to line up the converter bolts.Fast forward to the 70s I had a little gas station with a outdoor drive on Globe lift + I welded up a crossmember that would slide between the rails so we could set the transmission on it + with a couple of helpers lift the trans + up they went.Only a few times people includin me got skinned knuckles or pinched fingers. The 90s here in my repair shop in the beautiful Adirondack Mts I bought a very good adjustable( made in taiwan) transmission jack attachment from Harbor freight Tool co + did many transmission + gas tank jobs with it,A couple years later I added on to the original shop + bought a brand new two post above ground lift.( Pro lift model made in USA by Bend Pac) + did a few transmission jobs the old fashioned way on my back with my floor jack tranny adapter then a fresh Harbor Freight catalog arrived + I bought a cheap made in Taiwan under the lift Transmission jack that has a foot pedal to pump it up + a handle mid way to let it down + 4 screws under the plate to tilt it front to rear or side to side.the first transmission I did my self was a Chevy Dsl suburban 4WD with a 700 R4 .I have also done more FWD transaxles then I ever intended to + have changed many gas tanks + in tank pumps on todays vehicles. The floor jack trans adapter costed around 60.00 + the under the lift jack was around 160.00.I chain + Tie wire any transmission or fuel tank I lift. Now at 50 yrs of age safety is a # 1 Priority
