Some years ago I read of a process that used high pressure water/baking soda solution. It was covered in a four wheel drive magazine I believe. They claimed the process would not hurt chrome, glass, or weather stripping, would take off only the number of layers you wanted, and would temporarily treat bare metal against rust. Wish I had saved the article.
