For some years I used a coal stove I built out of approximately 30" diameter, 3/8 inch wall pipe. The stove's body was about 50 inches tall. It had a grate that swiveled, upper and lower doors, and was based on information I got from a book on coal stoves I had purchased at the time.

Soft coal is smelly, those if you who live in areas where you can buy good hard coal are fortunate.

I had the stove mounted on a stand I made that stood about 42" off the floor. It was fun in a primitive way, and a pain in the ass in a practical way, and I have never regretted the installation of my LP hanging heater.

But, observe all safety considerations, or you will burn the place to the ground, and injure yourself, too, and it is not worth that.

Just a few miles from here a residential garage burned to a black stain on the ground, with the lone exception of a charred Harley Davidson standling in the middle of the black place. The fire was started by a fuel leak on the motorcyce.

Be careful.
