I have a overhead natural gas furnace in my garage. My walls are insulated and I have been wanting to do the attic area as well. It will keep my garage tee-shirt warm in the winter when its time to work. I do not try to mess with a big amount of gasoline or paint when its burning. I also dont let the pilot run over night.

Another option to go along with some kind of heater would be solar! I missed out on getting free panels one time. My friend says you can build panels very easy. Take plywood and paint black and build a maze out of 2x6's and then cover the top with glass. Have a inlet hole on one side and an outlet hole on the other and then mount a duct into the shop with a fan in it to blow the air inside. You can daisy chain as many 4x8 boxs together as you want for more heat. Wouldnt cost anything really to operate. COuld keep a garage warm or above freezing during the day pretty ez.
