I used a wood stove in my garage (concrete block), but couldn't keep much of the garage warm, even tried insulating the ceiling, but there is too much space to heat. I used the kerosene heaters too, but the fumes are nasty.

I thought a good solution would be to get a small oil furnace and set it up outside the garage, and force hot air inside. Atleast the flames would be away from your work. I think you have to put an additive in the oil to keep it flowing in cold weather, but maybe a propane or natural gas would work better.

I've seen some outdoor wood furnaces at some fairs recently, don't know how well they work, but the idea seems reasonable.
