What theory are we talking about? Propane gas IS heavier than air and drops to the lowest point...which is why propane fired furnaces are not allowed in basements(without specialised saftey equipment). Natural gas IS lighter than air and rises. The reasons to mount any hot air furnace at the ceiling is to save space, avoid physical damage to the heating unit, and to reduce the risk of gasoline explosion ( gasoline vapors are heavier than air too)
As far as fumes are concerned, unless you're burning charcoal or coal, aren't they supposed to be vented out via the flue? I would be sure to include a make-up air flue if concidering a wood stove...and be extremely carefull when using any chemicals. All heat sources mentioned so far are concidered Open Flame. Read the label!
