When I rebuilt mine i put on a 8.5 to 1 head of a civilian head, a cam from oregon cam grinders in Vanc,WA. I didn"t want to change any thing on the out side as it was an all stock M-37. The used head only cost $25.00 and the cam was not that much even though i did not need one.Did it make a whole lot of difference? No, but it didn"t hurt anything eather. They say that the cheapest way to more horsepower is higher compresion, but if the engine can"t breathe it can"t take advantage of it. If you"re not going to make changes in the way the engine while breathe, dual exhaust, dual carbs, I would just stick to mild changes. Mill the head or find a civilian one thats 8.5to1, match the intake and exhaust port opening to the block,a lighter radiator fan blade,a more free flowing muffler.
