When you talk performance a couple of things are key.

Yes you still have the 5.83 gears. And that will always be a limitation

You need to increase the ability of the truck to breath. The stock exhaust system is very restrictive. Split headers are available for dual exhaust. They are also larger diameter. Air intake can also be improved. People put a mild cam in from Isky (sp). And that seems to help. There are dual carb manifolds available. Electronic ignitions are also available. Key point with the cam is that you loose the low end that this truck is know for and gives it its power and trace it for marginal improvements at the higher RPMs.

If I were doing a performance upgrade I would do it in the following order and stop when I get decent performance.

1) Electronic ignition (at least get rid of the points)
2) Exhaust modifications
3) Air intake no dual carbs
4) Dual carbs.

Vintage Power Wagons has some performance stuff but it is not cheap. You cna find the stuff other places also (speed shops).
