12" won't even get the hubs good and wet...24" won't cover the tires. But the purpose of the seals is to keep lube in and water and crud out. If you aren't going to take that precaution, for whatever reason, then you are going to do just that...get crud and water in your axles/diffs, probably. If you're backing and forthing across a creek once or twice a day, it's a cinch that in no time you'll be getting water in the axle/hub/diff. It's your call, your truck. You pay the piper, you call the tune.
