A few years ago, my brother and I were headed to a cousins wedding in Cleveland in his little D50. We stopped at a rest area for gas. I added oil and didn't get the cap on tight enough. When we pulled up to the toll gate to get off the turnpike, the hood started to blister. I yelled at him to hit the hood release as I got out. By the time I got the hood open there was a nice little blaze going. Thank God there was a guy hosing down the pavement nearby. We got the fire out, but not before most of the wiring was gone. (You should have seen the looks on the Troopers' faces as the Brinks truck pulled up in the next lane while. It sure looked like an elaborate setup!) We got to the wedding okay, and the truck made it back to Iowa, after some work.
As an afterthought, the mechanic told us we were lucky that we used water to put out the fire. He said that a chemicle from an extinguisher would have done more damage than the fire itself. Was he correct on that assumption?
