Turn the engine over until it is top dead center on cylinder #1. Timing mark will help you get there. Then remove the distrib. cap and note the position that the rotor is pointing. Measure it carfully (You can go by clock position i.e it is at 9:40) Remember that position. Remove your distrib and do what you need to do. When you ready to reassemble set the engine to top dead center on cylinder 1 again. Now reinstall the distrib. so that when it is fully seated the rotor will point to the exact position it was when you removed it. It may take you a couple of tries to get it in the correct position.
