JD,
I just finished a 251 long block for my '63 WM300. I farmed out the bore job, valves, balance, crank polish, and hot tanking. I didn't mess with my coolant tube. This engine only had 19000 original miles and the tube looked free of debris and rust when I shown a light in. So I can't help you much there. I had the Chrysler Industrial Engine Manual ( from VPW ) to refer to for torque specs and assembly info. I used the composite head gasket ( copper one side gasket material on the other ) from VPW. I've had good luck with these on the few small block Chevy's I've rebuilt. I could stand to be corrected, but as long as an engine is kept in a heated space in the winter ( to prevent condensation and rust ) and covered to prevent dirt and dust getting in it should keep for years. Good luck.
Brett
