Head Gasket

Referring to overheating and possible head warpage problem mentioned below, what typically happens when a head gasket blows? Is it a benign type of failure in which the engine would burn some coolant and I'd see it out the tailpipe? Or is it the type of situation where enough coolant could enter a cylinder to cause a bent rod/broken piston/crank, etc.? Or worse?
