Ballast Resistor

Hi folks,

I've converted my '49 flatfender to 12 volts negative ground, and it was recommended that I install a ballast resistor in the primary circuit of the ignition system. I did this, and now I've noticed that the resistor gets really, really hot if I have the ignition switch turned on. I haven't tried it to see if it gets hot when the engine is running. So far, I've only noticed that it gets hot when the switch is on, but the engine is not running.

Anyway, just wondering if this is normal. I know a resistor will build up heat by its very nature, but this is really hot (too hot to touch).

Thanks,

Matt
