It does sound like air in the system is your problem but I don't think your '97 has a fuel pump in the tank. Does your truck have the inline injector pump (as opposed to the rotary style)? If so, I think it's like my truck. My '95 has a lift pump on the left side of the engine which pulls fuel from the tank and supplies the injector pump. There is a plunger on the lift pump that you can use to prime the sustem. It's a bear to find. It's towards the rear and low on the left side of the engine. If you can't find it from above, look from the bottom side and follow the fuel lines.

There is also a fuel return line that can let air into the system. It's the flexible line from the fuel pump to the hard line on the firewall. This line goes bad before the others due to the high temperature of the fuel coming out of the injector pump. This line is easiest to find from under the vehicle.

There are many more knowledgable people than myself to ask at turbodieselregister.com.

Hope this helps.
