It sounds like all that excess oil just now built up caebon on the stems. I'd try puling the manifolds to gain access to the stems through the ports. Spray on your favorite solvent-in-a-can and try to work them loose from the valve cover side. If it's just carbon, not rust, you should still enjoy reasonable longevity.
