although lead is the ultimate repair...it is very time consuming and expensive...filler is fine...just make sure that you have no pin holes in your welds...if you find them during grinding, re-weld those spots...then coat the repair area with epoxy primer...next apply a metal filler(all metal) to the weld areas...very tough and water proof...don't try to smooth this to perfection...just rough sand it...then apply your finish coats of plastic filler(any brand of light weight filler, it flexes better than the old fillers)...when done to your liking re-coat with epoxy...followed by a urethane primer...for final filling...ready to sand for paint...( ah sounds so easy)...this type of repair will last for years...good luck
