Normally no ground wire is needed

This may be the problem...the Alt grounds through the case for everything except the field...if you have a ground wire on the field (push on terminal), you are defeating the normal way of controlling voltage.

Next question: What type voltage regulator do you have? The electronic one with a triangle plug? Or the mechanical one with the relay inside? The three wire (output, two push on field terminals) alternaltor uses the electronic regulator. The two wire (output and one push on field terminal) uses the mechanical regulator. The two wire alt cannot be used with the electronic. The three wire can be used with the mechanical regulator, but you need to ground one side of the field. My '67 GTX has this system right now and it works but is not correct.

Have a look at your regulator and let me know which one you are using.
