Hi Alan,
6 years is too long to wait between shifts. (ouch!)
The idea of double clutching is to match shaft rpms, both in the transmission and engine and driveline, to prevent all of that grinding. Start out very slow on a flat smooth terrain (abandoned parking lot?) and practice, practice, practice! Experiment with clucth shift speed, engine rpm and "ride" the shift lever with your hand (put a little pressure on the lever towards the gear that you are shiftimg into) but NOT too hard or fast. Every transmission is a little different and you have to aquire the "feel". Keep at it and soon you will be figuring out the little tricks that it takes to shift your tranny. Now,... all that being said, if you have some internal problems in the transmission, or just plain huge square cut gears, it will be very difficult to learn. Again just start at slow rpm and slow speed and practice until you get it.
