Voltage woes

I have a 61 townwagon powerwagon. It has a 76 360 truck motor/ alternator/ voltage regulator. I have re-wired from front to back, checking all wires and connections for grounding possibilities. I just replaced the voltage regulator( 2 wire hook-up), yet I'm still showing 50 amps when RPMS are at 2000 and up. I'm at a loss as where to look next. Any ideas? I'm tired of cooking batteries.
