I am currently using SolidWorks on Dell computers. We have such a missmatch of equipment, that is about all I can tell you. Our system will run several licenses of ProE with no trouble at all. SolidWorks drags it down a bit. It seems to have an appetite for memory. But, our hardware seems to be the problem.

I am currently modeling some assemblys for equipment to form and move large concrete drain tile. At the moment, we have just straight SolidWorks and have not explored any of their other offerings. We have not done any piping or virtual reality yet.

It is a Windows based software and I find it very user friendly. It will let you work with sketches and components not fully constrained. You can use this feature to create motion within the model to check geometry of travel and interference. Unlike ProE, it will let you work "around" a problem and come back and fix it once you determine the best procedure. As Frank mentioned, Joe has Belt Pulley models created with SolidWorks and Dave Maher has one of my screen captures of a WDX pickup box model in wire frame mode on his web site for yoou to see.
