I am a Mechanical Designer by trade. The best method currently available to create reproduction parts is to reverse engineer originals and model them as 3 dimensional solids within a solid modeling computer program. Fit, form, and function are checked with solid assemblies in the program, and precise 2 dimensional drawings are then created from these. The manufacturer then creates the part to the exact detail as prescribed in the drawings. With this method, the "instructions" are basically all "in writing", and there is less chance for errors and mistakes. This technique initially adds more cost to the end product, however most of that cost is made up in the end because the manufacturer no longer has the responsibility of measuring and reverse engineering, on the fly, parts that the vendor has left with them and asked them to "make these". The manufacturer can bid the job lower.

As these trucks become more popular, and parts become more scarce, hopefully more parts will be reproduced in this fashion. I design parts for the construction equipment manufacturers. I would love to apply my skills to reproducing Power Wagon parts. (Anyone want to hire me?)

Until then, talk to VPW. They will make it right.

Clint
