So if they are 17.5s, there should be no problem.

If they are 17s, then yes you need to find a good tire shop and have them install the new tires, make sure the lip the lock ring sits in is clean, and not full of rust beofre mounting the new tire.

I have my old tires dismounted, then I have the rims blasted, I paint them, and then I have them remounted, this allows me to check the mating surface, and makes the rim safer to put back together.

But unless you have a so called "saftey" rim, (these have not been used for a while, and I don't think they were used on our trucks) splits are perfectly safe to use, and except for being a bit less stable at high speeds(read steering wheel shake) they are a fine rim. I plan to run a set of 16" split rims on my 59 W300.
