Being a Massage Therapist, graduated with honors and an associates degree and having the same injury in a terrible car accident in '96( I'm REALLY lucky to be alive) I have learned to trust the chiropractors. I went to doctor after doctor, had bone scans, cat scans, MRI's, physical therapy, meds, nothing helped. However you MUST NOT stop living your life. Too many people let this injury ruin their life. The surgery options are usually fusing the two vertabrae together with pieces of bone. (I belive from your pelvis) and I'm told it is very painful. I would definitely get a second chiropractors opinion before ANY surgery of that nature. They are bone and spine specialists and ARE real doctors, can prescribe medicine or herbs and have gone to a lot of schooling. go to another chiro tell him the symptoms and see what he says, don't tell him what the other chiro said before hand (That would tend to bias his opinion)then decide from there. Also keep in mind that herniated discs DO heal, I know. my herniated disc stopped me from going to school to be a mechanic, at the time the doctors told me I would never be able to do that kind of work. But now I work on cars all the time. And though I do still have some back troubles they have been greatly reduced. A lot of times what it takes is time and regular excersise. NOT physical therapy. After an injury of that sort the last thing you should be doing is physical therapy(in my opinion, speaking from experience) for me it just put me in agony (i use the word to it's utmost meaning)and nothing got better. Several months later i was still in pain every day all day suffering from neckaches, blinding headaches and migranes that would leave me blind, sometimes deaf, and unable to speak and usually lacking sensation in most of my body. So get the second or third opinion and go get some massage done on it. Have them try acupressure cupping and scraping(deep tissue) the chinese are very knowlegeable in these areas also see if they know any trigger point. obviously you want them to work distal to the affected area NOT on top of the injury (however cupping and scraping won't hurt)good luck i hope this helps. if you need to ask me anymore questions you can either e-mail me or write on the forum and i'll see what I can do to help.
P.S. i wouldn't do any heavy lifting for awhile! OUCH!
