The semi floating axle has one nut on the outside end that holds it to the axle housing. This nut is often covered by a round cap perhaps 4 inches deep and 3 inches in diameter. So there will be only one large nut or a cover cap visible on the outside end of a semi flating axle.

The full foating axle has a round flat flange at the end of the axle that is bolted to the hub with 5, 6 or 8 bolts, depending on the axle. Often the same number of bolts hold the axle to the hub as hold the wheel to the brake drum. The outside end of a full floating axle is a thin (1/2 inch or so) flat disc with a 5" to 8" diameter having nuts on studs in a bolt circle near the flange's circumfrence.

Hope this helps. F
