Forget the home made tool. As previously stated, you MUST use a wheel puller. The manual advises not to bang on the end of the axle as damage to the bearings may result. Try to find a shop that will do it for you or find the right tool. There is no substitute! A wheel (drum) puller is a very heavy duty tool. Once bolted to the drum via the wheel lugs, you tighten the puller and can even hammer on the tightening lever. It is made for this. Do not completely remove the axle nut. Only loosen it a few turns. There is a huge amount of energy released when the wheel pops free and the axle nut prevents that energy from making a permanent impression on you.
