I was looking over some old Union contract handbooks, and the wages were not all that great in those days. So while gas was someimes 17 cents a gallon and a bag of groceries was well under $10, weekly incomes were often around $100-$150. The last of the cheap American cars was in the early 1970's, as Ford worked very hard to price the Maverick at $1995.

An old neighbor of mine has an Olds Rocket 88 with dual quads and the rare hood that has clear glass panels in it so you can see the engine (three are known to exist). He puts on cheater slicks and looks for hot rodders to make mince meat of.
