may be that you need to rejet your carb. if your engine is smaller in the truck that could do it. but, try this first. (you could also mess with you accelerator pump positons, see if it blasting too much fuel in when you stomp on the gas.) i would zero out your idle mixture screws and start the settings fresh. a good rule to follow is to zero them (all the way in) then turn 2 and 1/2 turns out, do them EVENLY then do rest in half turns until the engine runs smooth. you could also do a rebuild (Napa should have a rebuild kit, but if its a 79 you may just end up getting a newer carb because it's just going to get harder and harder to find the rebuild kits) (Personal experience talking here)i have had LOTS of carb experiance so if you need help write me @ sasquatch711@aol.com i'll probably be able to help
P.S. i personally would ditch the thermo- quad when my dad first bought the Ram i now own it had a thermo quad and it gave them nothing but trouble and i'm heard similar stories from everyone who has dealt with them. my grandfather (a mechanic of going on 65 years) put on a carter Competition series AFB carb and it's been great, edelbrock also makes a 600cfm carb that should fit your truck for the 318 and 360 it's # 1406. hope this helps Jason Lewis
