I have photos of some army trucks using a smaller outside tire on the front dualies. As you say, they ran on the inner tires when on pavement, and in soft muck or sand sank enough for the outer tires to bite. This practice was discontinued during the way, probably due to rubber shortages. The extra tires had to be the same size as the others because they were spares. The CCKW 2-1/2 ton 6x6, Model 352 short wheelbase, was designed as an artillary prime mover. It was equipped with two spare tires, and the front hubs were set up for dualies. This was for floatation when setting artillary pieces in muck. The long wheelbase CCKW had only one spare, since it was not intended to place artillary pieces. Most of the bigger short wheelbase 6x6 artillary prime movers were also were set up for dualies and carried two spares, like the 4-ton Diamond T and the 7-1/2 ton Mack NO series.
