work truck help

i am slowly coming to realize that no matter how much i do to modernize my m-37 it will not fit the bill as an everyday work truck. it is better built than almost anything out there but its drawbacks (short bed, slow speed etc.) will either cause me to have to do major surgery to it or to buy a work truck. i think that i am going to go the work truck route.

i went and looked at the dodge 2500 trucks tonight. i like them alot and am considering both the v10 and the cummins. i think i'd rather pay more for gas than deal with the cummins noise. gas cost is not my major concern and i know the v10 guzzles it.
i am not going to tow anything more than a trailer with the command car on it so i really don't need gearing that would keep me from going along at a good clip.

what tips can you guys offer me as to what options i should get and what i should avoid. i would like to keep the mechanicals as spartan as possible (less electronics) and i am going to get a quad cab and lwb. is there a true crew cab coming out anytime soon from dodge in a 2500?

if this works out i might be selling my m37 and keeping my command car. the command car is rare and i like it a lot, but is possibly the most impractical of the 4x4 dodges. any imput is appreciated.
