The creature lives! But I have an oil filter question.

Well, I finally got the 230 engine in my '49 flatfender running last night! It sounded so good. I ran it up to 1800 rpm to break in the camshaft and lifters.

I only got to run it a grand total of 8 minutes, though, because the flat rubber o-ring that goes between the oil filter lid and the filter housing squeezed out with a very audible "pop." This happened 3 times, resulting in oil pouring out onto the garage floor. I placed the o-ring back in its spot and restarted the engine each time. The o-ring was new, and I had the T-handle pretty darn tight.

I can think of two reasons this might have happened. One is that I painted the outside of the filter housing, including the lip where the o-ring seats. I was thinking maybe the paint started "creeping" and that was enough to let the gasket squeeze out, under pressure.

The other reason might be that I replaced the copper washer under the T-handle with a piece of gasket material of the same shape and size. The copper washer was all squashed flat from years of use. The gasket material did not leak, but maybe it doesn't provide the right spacing between the T-handle and the lid, in order to compress the o-ring enough.

Has anyone had this happen with their oil filter o-rings? Can you help me solve this problem?

Thanks!

Matt
