Conversion from 6 volts to 12 volts

I'm converting my '49 flatfender to 12 volts, negative ground, and I was talking to a technician at a generator/starter repair shop and he told me I need to get a hold of a "voltage regulator" that steps down 12 volts to approx. 6 volts, for use in my fuel gage wiring. The unit he described is a product from Radio Shack, it has 3 very thin prongs that have to be soldered to connectors. I have since purchased the item he described, for about 2 bucks.

But I've talked to a buddy of mine who converted his early 50's Chevy pickup to 12 volts, and he said he just used some kind of small device he picked up at an auto parts store. He said it looked like a resistor, but he wasn't sure if that's what it was. It only had two terminals sticking out of it, and he didn't recall having to do any soldering. It sounds like this would be simpler.

Does anyone know what either of these people is talking about, and which way is better?

Thanks for the help!

Matt
