Going to those two training areas were like garden spots,...after a year in Berlin, on the wall. I remember that Chezk border duty troops received isolation pay, overseas pay and hazardous duty pay, ....all while we guys in Berlin, 110 klicks inside East Germany, recieved squat in addition to our $78 bucks a month, because Kennedy had decided that Berlin was American soil. It was a matter of pride that with 300,000 Warsaw troop surrounding the 6,800 Americans in Berlin, we considered the odds even. In fact we were pretty sure that we would beat you 'zone' guys to Moscow!
