M37 bumper loops????

My 1952 M37 has a u shaped loop welded to each side of the front bumper. I thought they were VFD add-ons, but I noticed the 53 for sale in the classifieds has the same loops. What are they for and why are they one just a few trucks(I have only seen two)?
