I would look at chrome molly 4340 or 8620 round stock (1 inch thick). You want something strong that won't bend easily, but not brittle. Look for any place in the area that sells industrial supplies or search the web using "google.com" on "steel shafts." You might also look at trucks/cars in wrecking yards for something that might work.
