I had a similar problem one time in my old '68 WM300. I first thought it was fuel (it wasn't) and then thought the timing might be 180 degrees off (it wasn't). It turned out that the previous owner changed the points and condenser, and somehow chafed the wire on the condenser. So the condenser wire was shorting out against the distributor.
I got tired of it not running so decided to tear it down to the frame and restore it. It wasn't until 2 years later that I found the chafed wire!
